Cerros de Mavecure

In the footsteps of Alexander Von Humboldt we fly from Bogota to Puerto Inirida on the border of Colombia with Venezuela.

Our adventure will start in this little town, capital of the Guainia department. Over the Rio Inirida we will go by boat upstream through the Colombian Amazon. Here we see four gigantic stones arising out of the dense jungle. At the foot of the biggest stone lies our destination, the Indian village ‘El Remanso’’.

The Cerros de Mavecure are the remains of the oldest mountains in Latin America. The area is inhabited by several Indian communities, the Puinave of El Remanso is one of them and this is where we will stay for the night. In the summer it is possible to camp on one of the Cerros which we will include when possible. From camp we will have amazing views over the jungle.

Generally we offer packages of 5 days/4 nights including the days we need to travel from Bogota to Inirida and back. From these 4 nights we stay 1 or 2 nights in Inirida and 2 or 3 nights at the Cerros de Mavecure with an Indian community or on the rivers beach in the dry season. On request we can arrange packages of more days so other interesting destinations in the area can be visited. One of these options is a tour to ‘El Caño Bocon’, a branch of the Inirida River, which takes 6 hours by boat to get to the small waterfall where there is a great abundance of fish (Bocon). Other possible destinations are down the Inirida river in the direction of ‘La Estrella Fluvial del Sur’, where the rivers Inirida, Orinoco, Atabapo and the Guaviare come together.

The second package that we offer in this region is a program to ‘Raudal Alto’, a tour of minimal of 6 days. This is a program with even more adventure where we will spend a lot of time in the boat and have to cross several currents. Sometimes it is even necessary to drag the boat along these currents over the river bank or jungle. During this trip we will sleep at Indian communities or on the river beaches in the dry season.

Important: these above mentioned packages bring you to very remote areas. We offer these programs as being very adventurous and the accommodation is very basic as we will sleep in hammocks and or tents. It is necessary to be vaccinated against yellow fever and you need to be able to show your card.

Travel as light as possible with clothes that are suitable for a warm and humid climate and for the night clothes with long sleeves and long trousers. Further more you need an healthy and an adventurous spirit, especially for the option ‘Raudal Alto’. When planning this package please keep in mind the days of the week you want to travel as there are only a couple of flights per week to Inirida so this package can’t start just any day of the week.
