Throughout history, the islands have been influenced by the English, Spaniards, Africans and the Dutch. Whereas the Spaniards claimed the islands first, they were busier colonizing the Colombian mainland. Therefore, English pirates led by Henry Morgan took over the islands. Only years later, the Spaniards regained control until Colombia’s independence in 1822.
San Andres is the largest of the two islands, with a surface of about 27 square kilometers. This tropical island is a highly popular holiday destination amongst Colombians and compared to Providencia, it offers a wider range of hotels, restaurants and tax-free shops. Providencia has volcanic origins, is very mountainous, boasts some natural water sources and has friendly locals. It is the smaller island of the two, is more difficult to reach (only via San Andres), but has less tourists and is more picturesque and laidback. The best diving is in Providencia. The must-try cocktail is definitely el Cocoloco.
San Andres and Providencia can very well be combined with other destinations on the Caribbean coast such as Cartagena, Santa Marta and Tayrona National Park, but also not to miss cities such as Medellín and Bogotá. We customize your holiday according to your dreams.
