Santa Marta & Surroundings

The Caribbean city of Santa Marta, about four hours northeast of Cartagena, forms the ideal base from which to start exploring marvelous nature reserves, astonishing beaches and exciting jungle, spot toucans and other tropical animals, enjoy a heavenly massage, hike to ancient archaeological sites and meet the Kogi Indians.

Santa Marta is the oldest city of Colombia and the place where Simón Bolivar died. Its nicest beaches are found just south in Rodadero, but oh – how pretty are the beaches that you will pass during your one-day or multi-day hike (or horse ride) through Tayrona National Park, just north of Santa Marta. What makes Tayrona very special, is that the western part consists of a tropical dry forest (quite rare) and that the more eastern part is completely different as it consists of tropical rainforest.
